A photo would help. If this is an actual fireplace and not an insert. The bricks and hearth are not just decorative and for looks. The brickwork is part of the firebox. Removing the wall brick, making it flush with the wall, and lowering the hearth would be reducing the dimensions of the firebox itself. This would make it dangerous to use. Consult with a fireplace specialist for advice and recommendations. You don't need to use him but better to be safe than sorry.
