How do I remove the brick around my fireplace and put up a wall?

We have a rather large opening in the fireplace and a high hearth. I would like to lower the hearth and remove all the bricks on the wall. We would like to make the opening flush with the wall with some trim around the opening.

A photo would help. If this is an actual fireplace and not an insert. The bricks and hearth are not just decorative and for looks. The brickwork is part of the firebox. Removing the wall brick, making it flush with the wall, and lowering the hearth would be reducing the dimensions of the firebox itself. This would make it dangerous to use. Consult with a fireplace specialist for advice and recommendations. You don't need to use him but better to be safe than sorry.
