How do you make a mantle? I would like to put a mantle on a fireplace

The one I took down was Oak and it was 60 in long. I think I would like a dark one and just like a hunk of wood, they're too expensive and I don't know how to make one.
What style do you want? Brackets? Floating? See if this gives you a good start to recreating the mantle of your dreams!

Hello Tami,
Any chance you could Stain the one you took down to dark oak or Mahogany? Just rub down to remove any Varnish, or if you don't fancy that , there are Coloured varnishes available that you could try. Then if successful replace it. You could always add a trim to make it look thicker.
It's kind of fancy I would prefer just like a long rectangle
Buy the timber stain to choice and fix to fireplace with brackets of timber.
