How do I whitewash a stone fireplace?

i want to update my ‘70’s style stone fireplace. I’m considering whitewashing it but don’t know where to start. Any suggestions?
Just neutral white paint, diluted 4:1 and I would use a spray bottle, a small roller & work it in with a small brush.
Of course mask off everything else & clean the smoke residue off the area right above the firebox.
If you don’t want the pinkish undertone I’m the stone to come through, then I would tint the paint a tiny bit, in whatever color direction you’re wanting.
Very Light green cancels red.

I tried this in my other home. I used regular latex paint mixed with some water and it worked like a champ!
I have a glossy sheen on my rock fireplace. Any suggestions on removing it to whitewash? I don't really want to completely paint it, just soften the look.
