Here's an idea I saw by a DIYer the other day: They used vinyl (laminate) wood flooring and glued it to the brick with liquid nails. The image I'm attaching looks like wood that they may have glued on or used brick anchors of some kind. Just some ideas :)

Please post a picture of the fireplace showing where it is in the room. That way more Hometalkers will be able to see the limitations of your space and would then be able to offer suggestions specific to your individual situation.
You could try to use sandpaper and get some of the paint off and give it a whitewashed look.
