I'm assuming you are talking about the round light fixture that has a globe that is held on with a finial. We call them "boob lights". :-) Three of mine were replaced using ceiling fans/with lights, but you need adequate fan support and your head room may be too low. There are LED fixtures that fit right into the existing light's junction box. They have a low profile and are easy to install. One thing to be aware of is the that the ceiling may need some touch-up painting if you are reducing the size of you fixture. The photo shows one of these LED fixtures that I put in my garage. The good things to realize is that you will probably never have to change bulbs or clean the globe again.
If you are referring to the "typical" lighting fixture with a finial or nut to hold the light on, there are a surprising number of options at even big box stores to change the look very inexpensively.
remove the globe and find a lamp shade that will fit :-)
