Hi Kristin, Is there a slot running down the distance of the shelves? That slot is where you should prop your plates in. It keeps the plates from sliding down. Then stack your bowls and cups and saucers in front of the plates. I hope this helps you.
There is a putty like substance, it can secure your china, or hang posters, or put on back bottom edges of hung frames to keep them in place. I can’t think of the name of it, but it is in the department by picture hanging supplies. It does not stain paint, wood, or wallpaper either.
Scotch removable adhesive putty is what I use. You can find it in hardware stores, Wal-Mart and even Amazon. I use it on my commode lid to display breakable decorations.

Hi, put doilies or table runners on the shelves then place dishes accordingly. It's pretty & keeps them from sliding around.
