Kitchen Storage Space Needed

Teresa K
by Teresa K
I'm painting my kitchen and have been wondering what to do with this wasted space. Storage is definitely an issue. The space between the cabinets/counters and stand-alone pantry houses the garbage can on the bottom, but the area on top is open as is the area to left of pantry. I had a bakers rack, but it gets cluttered and isn't visually appealing or practical for "storing" items. Any thoughts, suggestions??

We had a similar space and got a huge second hand entertainment center, with doors, to fill in the entire space. We painted it to match the kitchen cabinets. Then, we had plywood cut to make shelves. There is a bottom area for the garbage can. Everything is behind closed doors and it looks very neat.

I really like the idea Liz had to put in a 2nd hand cabinet with doors. Another option would be to install open shelving on the area above the trash can to create additional storage.

I built what looks like an armoire on the outside. The top 2/3 have adjustable sheleves and racks on the doors. The lower section has 2 roll out shelves. We made it from decent quality plywood and painted it black. It sits in our foyer just a few steps from the kitchen. I tried to upload pictures but failed.

That space looks like it is just made to be a continuation of the kitchen cabinets. What if you took the current cabinet out and built in shelves in that whole area. You'd likely have to put a vertical board next to your cabinets to close the area off. Then put closet or regular interior doors in front of the shelves--they'd kind of look like french doors? The doors could match your cabinet color or your trim color. Not sure if this makes sense or if you need that much storage space, but I think it could look really nice and add a bunch of storage for you.

I had a similar wall. I wallpapered. Then built shelves over the wallpaper. I painted the shelves to compliment the wallpaper. Then used the space as an open pantry. Use baskets and such for potatoes, onions...

If you pulled out the current cabinet and built in shelves or another cabinet and used old screen doors as cabinet doors , that would be cute and unique .
