I keep mine under my sink. I would love to get one of the garbage/ recyclable roll out kits, but am waiting until I get new cabinets. So my first choice would be one of those kits ! But since I'm waiting , I lined the bottom of the cabinet with washable shelf liner ( just in case ! ) Then put in my bins.

Pamela's answer is a good one. We had the kit installed in our cabinet base when we built our house. Another way is to make a cover that stands alone. You would need to take the shelf out so the cans fit in the cabinet
I use a canvas bag inside one of my cabinets for recyclables. The canvas bag has a plastic liner so it can be cleaned out.
