I suggest that you get some fabric (maybe Sunbrella which will stand up to sun and weather), cut it into strips and weave it through your slats.
Marcia has the right idea... and the easiest... Joann's sells out door fabrics... and if you sign up ... the company regularly puts out coupons for up to 60% off one regular priced item.... which includes a single 'cut' of fabric
You could also use Shade cloth..available at Home Depot or Lowe's in the garden department... get it by a pre-cut amount (15 ft) or by the foot (cut to order) it comes in black, brown, green, and tan. A home sewing machine will sew it.. but it does not ravel, so hemming is not needed except for looks.
Note: for both kinds of fabrics... use a UV treated thread since it will be out in the sum
