keep the plantings simple and use specimen plants or slow growing ornamental. Use good quality weed block and small stone. Blow out grass clippings or debris in the stone to prevent weeds from taking root. Ease of long term maintenance is key - unless you have a gardener on staff.
Kb1 is right about landscaping your property only with features that require as much maintenance as you are capable of and willing to keep up with. If they require more, then install those only if you are financially able to pay a regular gardener.
Lots of picture ideas in this link. https://www.google.com/search?q=decorative+walkways&rlz=1C1TSNF_enUS438&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwj_kJvWwZzXAhVF2mMKHQYMDM8Q_AUICygC&biw=1242&bih=579 Also, just so you know, you can often find free rocks, bricks and patio blocks on Craigslist. I've built walkways in my back yard with mostly free items, including broken bricks as in the photo. Usually you have to get them yourself but worth it if you're not driving too far to get them. They reduce the need for water and maintenance.

What is best to do is dependent on your type of home. For instance our narrow two story brick home has very tall window that extend very low. Over the years we discovered that high bushes and plants distracted from the design of our home. We have lovely shaped beds on either side of our curved walkway. The perennial very, very low bushes and grown covers look inviting and fit right in with the design of our home. Take photos of the front of your home and do some creative photo or felt pen editing. Take your time. Seek true garden professional options. It took us years to finally obtain just the perfect look. Good luck.
Lavender and roses would be beautiful.
