Playhouse/ fort

Question

I have a kindergartener who has always wanted a fort, clubhouse  or tree house.  I'm trying ti find an affordable way to build /adapt a clubhouse/playhouse for his birthday this summer.  I think he'll be too old after that.  I'd buy on craigslist, but haven't seen one after mos of looking.  would even buy a shed and dress it up/ adapt it.  any ideas?

Your idea about dressing up a shed is probably the best idea. As kids age their toys get bigger and so you will need a place for his bike and other toys later on. You could even find a metal shed (about $269 at Lowe's or wait til one gets marked down) and spray paint to match your house and even be able to cut out a window or two for light (you could use a storm window screwed over the hole). The shed would be big enough to play in and have a toy box and keep toys out of sight, seating, and probably even a place for mom to hang out with him. 
As he grows the shed will serve each purpose as a place for storage or even hang out and will not go out of style. Adding on to the shed with a porch or garden area would also look nice. You may even be able to find other sheds to convert too. good luck!

@Renee, thanks for the ideas,I'll probably go with the shed idea. maybe I can get one on sale or used, I have a handyman who can put a window if anyone can.

My son recently had this issue with the granddaughter, he made a great playhouse aka fort out of a 2 large pallets and some old privacy fencing. all used materials except for the screws and the roofing shingles ( he got those from a craigslist ad). its 8 ft by 4ft by 5 ft tall. granddaughter has used it for the past 3 years, grandson now plays in there.
