Maybe colored gravel, like white or even gray, surrounding the pit?

Hi Maryemethias, I think concrete brick pavers would be nice around your fire pit. Because they're concrete, you don't have to worry if any embers escape. Best of luck to you.
Hello Mary; You can purchase bagged small rocks, quite inexpensively at any home store, such as Home Depot, Wal-Mart, Etc.
Also, Square pavers are very cheap, at Wal-Mart.
Both items would be nice for you area.

Everyone in our neighborhood has a fire pit. One put stones in a circle all around. Another put bricks all around. Another had cement pored all the way around, enough to be able to place chairs all around. Most I see just use a decorative stone all the way around.
