When is the best time to plant trees in central North Carolina

I live in Linden North Carolina, about 20 miles north of Fort Bragg. I would like to plant some trees - specifically shade trees and a peach tree. When is the best time to plant.

  • I live in Garner, NC and have planted trees in spring summer and fall. I prefer fall planting because it is easier to keep the soil watered in the cooler weather. It takes about three years to get a tree established in this hot climate and you will need to keep it watered. By the second and third years, deep water and let the tree send down roots to find water deep in the soil. Watch for wilting and never let the leaves start to dry out and turn brown in the warmer weather. Check with the agricultural extension office in your county for a list of trees that thrive in your area. Check with neighbors about what they have success with. Fruit trees will not produce fruit for about three years because they are developing their roots rather than fruiting; early fruit should be removed so that the plant gets more established first. Fruit trees should not be planted close to the shade trees because they need sun, not shade. Consider your location for trees when choosing specific varieties of trees. The trees will vary in sun and water needs. In my area, they garden centers show trees in the spring but you can buy small trees on-line from mail order nurseries. You will need to plant the trees upon arrival and follow the directions for planting (may require a soaking before planting.) Most mail order places require you to save the original shipping package and receipt in order to get a replacement if the tree dies. I prefer mail order because the prices are better and over time the 'whips' (just looks like a stem) catch up with potted trees bought at the local garden center. Just make sure the variety you choose will succeed in your location. Some fruit trees require planted several trees, including different kinds in order to get pollination, some self-pollinate. The local agricultural supply centers also sell trees but mostly in the spring. Try a couple of mail order places and plant now (fall). Just keep the trees watered, especially when next years hot weather hits.

  • Fall is a great time to plant! Start planning where to place them according to their individual needs.

Plant in early spring after all danger of frost is past. Congrats on planting trees! WE used to live north of Fort Bragg and we never had the time or space to plant trees.
