Gophers have taken over my 83 year old mothers flower garden. How do we get rid of them without using poison?

Try putting peppermint oil on cotton balls then place inside their tunnel entrances. You will have to replenish as the scent lessens.

Hi Tammy; I make Whirly Gigs out of old empty bleach, vinegar, etc., gallon jugs. Simply wash out the jugs, turn them upside-down, and let them air dry. While they are drying, measure around the center of the jugs then use that measurement to make a template that just fits the jugs. Using a ruler and an ink pen, mark the template with 6 or 7 evenly spaced 'doors' then cut the 'doors' out with a razor knife or box knife. After the jugs are dry, tape the template around one jug and using a sharpie pen, draw the top, bottom, and ONE side of each of the cutout doorways onto the jug. Now, again using the box knife, cut the 3 lines on the jug for each doorway - be careful and make the lines straight and don't overcut the corners. Fold each door open on the uncut side, drill a hole in the center of the bottom of each jug {the bottom will now become the top of the Whirly Gig}, drive a 3ft length of metal pipe in the ground 2ft deep, put a 4ft piece of an old broom handle, mop handle, etc. for a wooden stake in the pipe, and using a wood screw {the ones that have a solid shank next to the head of the screw} through the drilled hole in the jug and screw it down into the wooden stake. Be sure to leave it 1/8" to 1/4" out of the stake so the jug can easily turn in the slightest breeze. The turning of the Whirly Gig causes a vibration to go down into the ground and it drives the gophers, mice, moles, etc., crazy and they leave the area real fast. I paint the doors, front and back, different colors so they also look pretty while they're spinning. I started this 15 years ago when the gophers were trying to take over my garden, lawn, and flower beds and after only 1 month, the rodents were all gone and I have been unbothered by them since. Then a jug finally wears out due to the hot summer sun and below 0* winter weather, I simply replace it with a 'new' one. Good Luck!

  • We built a windmill. Worked like a charm. They hate the vibration and move on.

I put moth balls in the openings of their tunnels, worked for chipmunk too. I've heard of putting sticks of gum down their holes, but this will kill them. I don't know if you want that.

Hi. I had the same problem last season 😨 I tried a few things... moth balls, even kitty poop at his hole😊 then I planted gopher purge and purchased a motion activated outdoor owl. Since then the little rascals have not returned. I'm not exactly sure which one worked...probebly a combination of 'em. Hopefully this helps a bit!
