If the driveway is damaged, then that will have to be repaired after getting to roots. If you know which tree they are coming from, trace the root's path to the edge of the driveway, dig there and cut the root. They're really tough, you might need a small hand saw.
SALT - will kill that root - first drill some holes and then pour salt into the holes - best to use wood boring drill bit. You can also use a HIGH Nitrogen fertilizer in the holes. Start with a narrow drill bit - then use a wider one until you are using the widest bit you have. OTHERWISE - you will have to dig next to the driveway on the side of the tree and when you find the roots - you cut through them.
If the driveway already has cracks from the roots, you might want to dig up the cracked driveway and cut up the roots and remove. Replace the bulk of the roots with a culvert, and fill in on top and around it with rocks and instant cement. Overfill the concrete at the top and smooth it with a board. Give it a day to dry before you drive over it. You can also place odd thick floor tiles or boards into the concrete before it dries. When you decide to redo the whole driveway, have the roots all along the way removed before paving. Only costs half as much as the whole house! ☺️
Salt will also kill tree
Thank you all so much for your helpful replies!😉 I appreciate you!
If the tree is yours, Call in an Arbouraculturalist or Tree Surgeon. If not yours, contact the owner to see if you can come to a compromise regarding the problem. Wouldn't like the tree to fall on your property and owner wouldn't like the bill for damage either.
