no matter how deep or wide I dig them out, they always come back.

(Lucky you!) Persistence kills any plant. Eventually.They are related to Rhododendrons, which show damage up to 2 years after the cause (dry branches 2 yrs after drought, for example).almost any tree can be killed by copper! Use copper or brass nails, and tack them into remaining stumps.Or send the roots to me...Helpful Reply -

Roundup brushed on the fresh cut ends. That will take it into the roots only, it may take doing this to each time a shoot is sent up from another spot. Roundup does not last for years, read the back of the label, you can plant within a short time. It only affects what it is put on, that is why if you paint it on it will not affect the soil.Helpful Reply -
