Place chicken wire over the area. Bury the fence about an inch underground. The plants will grow through the holes in the fence, but the squirrels can't get through the netting.
Moth balls
Plant a clove of garlic at the base of each bulb
We have this problem too. Our house was built in a park and there are lots of trees around, hence the squirrels. We tried 2 ways, the first was to remove the bulbs every fall-that became a major hassle. The other preferred way was to cover them with leaves as a mulch and then put chicken wire over the top of that, be sure to push the wire edges into the ground so they are met with a resistance if they try to dig up the area. The plants will peep through the openings in the chicken wire and the base bulbs will remain intact.
