How do you get rid of 4"o'clocks that have grown for years? They have taken over,Please help.

Do you have any other plants around it that you want saved? If there's nothing close to the plant you are wanting gone, pour boiling hot water over the base of the plants. It should kill the roots

smother them out with newspaper and cardboard

  They come back up right through both, layers of cardboard AND newspapers AND I'll add, landscape fabric... I HATE these plants... I cannot get rid of them and they popup EVERYWHERE - under a work table, hard places to get to, out in plain sight, in the middle of my rose garden (the thorns!) and everywhere else. They sprout in full shade, full sun, survive the west Texas heat and look like weeds.
  
  I will try boiling water.... maybe that will do the trick!!!
