Sandspurs grow in poor soil. The only way I know to get rid of them is to improve the soil.

The only way I know to get rid of them is to dig them up. Look for a Weed Popper at your local hardware store. It makes it much easier to remove the sandspurs. It took us a few years to totally rid our yard of them, but it can be done. Good Luck!
Yes digging them up is the key, the worst thing you can do is to wait until late summer or fall to do this as the stickers have all gone to seed it makes it very pockey and those seeds make a new plant. I suggest a pre-emergent on your area in the early spring to keep the seeds from sprouting, then dig up the rest, it is a process but worth it when they are gone.
If the weeds are not in your lawn you can use vinegar, it is a great natural weed killer.
If you are in an area, where burning is permitted, then I would.
Make sure you bag your lawn clippings when mowing and mow that area last and thoroughly wash mower blades and wheels.
Have you got a steamer. Steam directly kills everything
