Can someone please tell me what these various insects are & how to get rid of them? They are on my angel trumpets, begonias & tropical hibiscus trees that are being overwintered in an enclosed porch, zone 7b. Thanks!

Your pics turned out blurry, can you post some sharp ones?

The angel trumpet has mealy bug! Dilute organic soap like the one from trader Joes with all the religious sayings on the label.Put the dilution in a spray bottle and spray all over your plant.Be sure to spray UP as these things hang out on the bottoms of leaves. It really works.!!!

@Teresa C It is an insecticidal soap.Home Depot should carry the product. If they do not have it then go to your local nursery.

This is mealy bug which is caused by change in climate and under or over watering. It would be in your best interest to spray your plants down with insecticide soap and repo your plants .

Its called Dr Bronner's Pure Castile Soap. I use the Peppermint one.

I use rubbing alcohol and a Q-tip. I had a bad case of these bugs on a jade plant. Be diligent and get into every nook and cranny. The alcohol doesn't hurt the plant. My jade has recovered and is now lush and beautiful.

Mealy Bugs. 1/5 Rubbing alcolhol, 1/20 dish soap + water/ spray, repeat in a week or after a rain. Spray stalks and under leaves as well, as the bug is mostly on stalk, and the white cotton is the eggs. They like some plants and not others so look for spread on close by plants.

I think you might actually have a couple of bugs. Looks like the first picture is aphids, but it's kind of blurry and hard to tell. The insecticidal soap is the only thing you can use indoors. If you still have them in the spring you can get something stronger at your local garden center. Take them outside and give them a good spraying.

That first picture looks like either aphids or black fly. Insecticidal soap works on those as well as mealy bugs. As someone else said--be diligent. Spray every surface. Repot in the spring--outdoors.

looks like aphids mix up some original sunlight dish lotion and water and spray them down or try 1 part rubbing alcohol and 2 parts water spray all surfaces down that should help cheaply otherwise there are a ton of insecticide sprays you can get at a local hardware/garden centre or nursery

@Jacqueline Bennett I HAVE BETTER LUCK WITH THE ALCOHOL/SOAP MIX

I am sorry to say but agreed with everyone else you have more than one issue going on.As previously stated the only way to control the situation is to use the insecticidal soap and repot these plants.

I concur with other posters... looks like aphids and mealybugs. Take a few leaves with the bugs on them to any nursery. They will identify them for you and tell you what to do.

They also may be spider mites. Another natural suggestion, is a few drops of dish soap, garlic and hot pepper-let garlic and hot pepper soak in solution for 48 hours, strain and spray away. It works on aphids and mealybugs too. All good suggestions above also.

@Linda THIS IS A GOOD MIX ALSO. ON THE FIRST PHOTO, IT LOOKS LIKE YO HAVE 2 OR 3 INSECTS, BUT ONE OF THESE MIXES SHOULD DO THE TRICK. MAY TAKE 2 OR 3 TIMES BECAUSE THEY HAVE TAKEN OVER THE PLANT. IF MEALIES ARE THERE, YOU MAY WANT TO UN POT IT AND CHECK THE ROOTS AS I HAVE FOUND IF I HAVE MEALIES ON TOP, I HAVE THEM IN THE SOIL ON THE ROOTS ALSO.

Yes, you definitely have spider mites on the angel trumpet. They love those plants. Don't be surprised if when you spray the leaves fall off. It looks like they have done a lot of damage. But they should rebound if you spray. Also, don't over water. People really tend to over water their plants and that causes a lot of problems. Let the soil dry out before watering.

The white ones are called mealy bugs and the other ones are called aphids. There is a gardener named Jerry Baker who has out a lot of books and a newsletter that we will take care of all of your backyard garden problems you want to look him up
