These are actually what they look like - roots! The plant is stressed and trying to grow as best it can. Stressors??? There are a million of them: too much sun, too much humidity, too hot, too much water, not enough sun, not enough nutrients in the soil, poor soil (ex. clay or sand), even exposure to herbicides. Put on your detective hat and figure out what the biggest stressor is and try to alleviate it. Your plant will thank you.
