I spent a bit of $ and bought a Dyna-Trap. It's the best thing I ever did and the only thing that works consistently without a lot of work. You can try plants and candles but they only lessened the amount for us. Another thing that has worked is spraying original Listerine in the area to keep them away.

Running a larger oscillating fan will disturb mosquitoes enough to keep them away. If deck area is large, 2 fans may be needed.

Make sure to keep all excess water drained and change water in birdbathes frequently. Mosquitoes need very little water to breed in.

Mint plants. They are small enough to be a table centerpiece, and can be planted in conjunction with the larger citronella plants to create a natural barrier around your deck. Also look into attracting natural predators (like birds) who will eat the mosquitoes. Definitely dump any water where they can breed.

I am a fan of the oscillation fans, it disturbs their homing in on people. Just moved away.
