Do lime or mothballs really help keep snakes away?

I let my Boston terriers out and looking to my right this very long brown with spots snake was up against the side of my house and I was able to step back inside and got my husband which he did kill the snake but it did try to strike at my husband, we live in the country.

Peppermint oil. I deal with rattlesnakes all the time. If your backyard is completely fenced, install snake fencing. I also installed coyote rollers. Even though I live in a housing tract, it is a semi rural area with lots of wildlife on the edge of civilization.
If you have garden snakes, leave them alone. They are good for eating bugs and totally harmless to pets and humans.
I live in the mountains of eastern PA and we have copperheads and timber rattlers. I worry about my dog seeing one and becoming curious. There isn't time to dally and investigate, so I treat all snakes the same - kill them now and feel bad about it later. Any scent that you put outside isn't going to last long.
