Hello there,
The only way to stop the trees is to collect the nut seeds! When you have collected them your grandchildren can thread them on to string using a bodkin needle. They could make jewellery or String Curtain. They could stick them on Tins and Jars etc and paint them...................etc. You could off course plant the seeds into pots and sell them or give them away to a charity to sell for funds.
I just keep mowing the lawn.Raking the leaves in the fall will remove most of the nuts and seeds and the seedlings that do come up get cut off by the mower and smothered by the grass.
What I would do if I had trees that had nuts is to rake them up and put them in one place. In the fall I gather acorns from various places we go to fish or camp for the squirrels and chipmunks that inhabit our area. I put them under a huge maple in the front yard in a pile and within a day they are gone. By putting them in one spot, you can keep track if the are being taken away or not and you would expect the seeds to germinate in that area. The critters would also know where the nuts are and go to that area to get there food. In the summer when nuts aren't available to them, I leave treats like stale cereal, nuts, cookies, etc. to keep them happy and out of the gardens.
