I don't think it's spiders, they are carnivors. It's probably a beetle, they have been massive this year. Try using neem oil.
It really is hard to tell, try sprinking cayanne pepper around
Hello Yukon, I agree with Lyanne3, I don't think spiders. It sounds like some other kind of bug. (maybe slugs or beetles) I recommend using peppermint oil. A few drops around your plants should fix the problem. You can purchase it at Wal Mart in the candle aisle. It's inexpensive and effective. Good luck.
