Try purchasing a garden owl. You have to make sure to move it around every few days. I have also used fake snakes. Red hot pepper flakes also work. I sprinkled them all around my plants and in my pots. You may need to add more every few months.

Hi Peter. I have a garden owl in my vegetable garden. I make sure to move it around every few days. I also use fake snakes, and sprinkle red hot pepper flakes in my pots and even around the veggies in the garden. It works for me. Good Luck!

a dog might be your best bet to keep the squirrels at bay. They are smart and can get around or adjust to most deterrents you put out, but not a dog.

That must be why everyone in Raleigh gardens in mesh cages.......

I bought a very large free standing bird cage from craigslist (I could fit in it) and placed shelves horizontally using the wire cage sides. I had room for a large pot to sit on the bottom of the cage and used the shelves for smaller pots. Not only did it look fun, critters could no longer get to my plants. And it had wheels to move it around on my porch.
