Jackie, a shovel and elbow grease!

Make sure you get the roots if you really want to get rid of them because roots will grow new plants.

If their routes that are more woody you made need to use a tiller to grind up what you couldn’t get it but that only goes down so far.

Jackie,. Saturate the areas with water, wait a day, and see if you can pull them out. Do this slowly, if it doesn't work try a shovel. The wet dirt will make it easier. Aloha!

Both suggestions are good, the water will help loosen the soil around the roots. Try to dig as far as you can down the roots, if you have to leave smaller roots, they shouldn't regrow, it is the larger tap roots that go deeper that you need to get out. When we removed some old evergreen shrubs that needed to go, we dug down about three feet to get as much of the tap root as possible, but ended up cutting it off ways down and they haven't grown back yet after three years.
