Hello Shirley, I would say a foot covered with a boot could work LOL but I personally wouldn't get that close to one ;) and I am sure you don't want to either, so here is what I found in my search to effectively answer your question:

I just killed one in my rock garden with Wasp and Hornet Spray. No need to get close and did the job in seconds after one quick spritz.

I lived in an area with them. They move slow so I'd swat them with a fly swatter. They have a messy web so you know where they live, like in dark places. Keep everything really clean. You will never totally get rid of them as the young have a parashoot (sp?) like webbing that allows them to float on the wind to different places.

My friend gives them a squirt of Clorox Cleanup and swears it kills them dead.

Me..... if they're not in the house I leave them alone, and I'm pretty arachniphobic

Thank you. I'll try that. They are on the fence where they are repairing it.

Aside from spiders, diatomaceous earth is also a safe and effective way to kill silverfish, cockroaches, ants and fleas both inside and outside of your home. ... Instead, a light dusting is the best method to eradicate the spiders and several other varieties of insects from your home.
