    if it is painted/colored metal, you can use a baking soda / water paste and a soft cloth; if it is 'brass' it probably has a protective surface to keep it from tarnishing; plain water/dish soap won't scratch the finish;

    I would sand it down with a fine grit sandpaper and spray it with a metallic spray paint.

    Scrub with a brillo pad. Rinse well. Spray paint.

    Hi Bonnie, yes ours is also brass. My husband cleaned the brass mail slot, door knob and back plate recently without removing them, and they look great. Don't know what he did though.

    Hi Bonnie he said he just used a brillo pad. But usually when he does this he removes the pieces and buffs them up on his "wheel" in the basement.

  • I’d pick up a brass cleaner and follow those instructions as it would likely be as easy as putting the cleaner in and buffing it off, such as Brasso. That way I’d know too that the cleaner was appropriate for the material.

    What material is the slot made of? Are you a renter and already talked to the landlord?
