Painting with the sand/paint would be okay, until you need to paint again! I found a set of rubber stair treads and screwed them in place. I found some cheap but sturdy ones in the 'junk' catalogs I get in the mail. Mine are about 24"x8", large enough to walk down the steps on Any lacy looking with a butterfly in the design. I've also seen them at Lowes but more expensive. Hope this helps.

Use carpenter’s glue or and other outdoor adhesive. Squirt or thickly brush strips and swirls of glue on each step. Spread sand to cover the glue. Let it dry at least one full day. Then sweep the steps and add a dirt scrubbing welcome mat or throw rug at the top of the steps. No slip, no sand in the house. ☺️
