When I moved in to my 50 year old home years ago I also wanted something unique. I used wood and iron. I found a welder who made exterior staircase and porch railing. I picked out the pieces I wanted and a design made by myself and he made it. Then I painted them a matching color and framed them with pretreated wood an had them mounted onto the deck when I had it rebuilt. It was falling in and I had to redo it. Several years later I am building a flower garden just in front of it and eventually will add a faery garden to it.
Get lattice and make screens that are not attached or sunk into the ground.. You live in an apartment and cannot add something that you cannot remove .
