Hi Simone! I hope you get the real answer but I'll take a guess. It may be some type of "lawn tractor, watering device". I remember my dad having something similar years ago and it was hooked to water which drove/powered the contraption. His was a John Deere green. Can't wait to see what William and others say it is! :)
It looks like a rolling connector for hoses. It enables your hose to be connect and rolled around without catching on surfaces. Very helpful when rolling over surfaces that could wear a hole in your hoses.
It is a vintage Thompson Company traveling lawn sprinkler
iT MIGHT BE A hOSE WATER sPRINKLER.
Ding, ding, ding, a winner! Yes, it is a traveling sprinkler. The concave wheel in the front sits on the hose and follows whatever shape you lay the hose out in. The water powers it to move. When is reaches then end, you move the hose and start it all over again. Then gears insure it only moves forward and does not slip backward. Ours was yellow and red.
rain tractor for watering your lawn it hooks to your hoses and rides up to hose to water lawn
I believe your travelling sprinkler may be a Sears Roebuck product.

Wow we could use a sprinkle like that around here! Never seen one with wheels before nice find. If you could add motion activation this would scare the snot our of feral cats.
I like Mogie's idea about a motion activated sensor.

It"s in bad shape (I think), so it's time to send off to someone/someplace to put to use.
