Hello, for all of our outside painting we use Rustoleum. Although those spools are generally not treated, (we used to have one as a porch table) you can buy Liquid Sandpaper and apply that before applying the rustoleum paint.

    Hi Stephanie,

I'm assuming you will be using it as an ornament and not to hold water? THe reason is, Acrylic - Plastic or waterbased exterior paints are water resistant but not water proof - there is a distinction. Acrylic paints dry and remain flexible so allow the timber to expand and contract with temperature and moisture changes - good for exterior timber work. Enamels or Oil based paints dry very hard like paint on a car and are water proof and won't allow moisture in or out. It won't allow the timber to breath and will eventually flake off the timber.

So I'd be using an exterior grade waterbased house paint, you should be able to buy a sample pot of colour to do a small project for a few $$$. and use the first coat as a sealer to protect the timber, by mixing a little (tiny) amoutn of water in it so it soaks in.

    Good luck

    Andrew

You could use an oil based marine paint or exterior waterbased paint.

A good oil-based exterior porch paint should work well on the spool. Several coats with appropriate drying time between coats should do the trick.

  • Exterior paint - I'd use oil-based for durability.

Absolutely! Chalk Paint® loves the great outdoors! It offers an inexpensive way to freshen up garden furniture, fencing (more on that, here!), plant pots, sheds, and even walls.
