How do I change color of cheap vinyl “leather” on an ottoman?

Bought a red “leather” storage cube ottoman. It is too red and I would like to tone it down a little. Paint? I’ve read all postings about painting upholstery, but none of them mention fake leather.

I think it would chip and peel off but I'm not an expert on painting vinyl. I'd just go to a local fabric shop and get new fabric. To recover an ottoman should be simple unless it has a lot of buttons.
If I was going to try and paint, I'd get the spray paint made for plastic.
