How do I change the color of naugahyde dining chair seats?
I bought a set of dining chairs from a thrift shop in perfect condition, including the seats. But they are covered with a green, naugahide-plastic-something which is pretty ugly. Because I have large dogs and a messy husband, I don't really mind the fabric, if I can just change the color. If I can't , I will recover them but I'm hoping to paint them somehow.

Looks like vinyl and vinyl is plastic. Therefore, spray paint that specifically adheres to plastic should work for this project. Fabric spray paint is more flexible than any other spray paint, but it is more expensive.
Rust-oleum Specialty Vinyl is a very good product. The coverage is great. The final result is shinier than satin but not as shiny as gloss.
Rust-oleum Fabric & Vinyl great coverage. Also good coverage but end result is a very shiny finish. This product also is seems to chip off.Hello Charlotte! I don't think spray painting--even with a paint made for plastic--would be durable for long. It looks as if that material is lightly textured as well. You could try it--with the idea that if it doesn't work you can recover the cushions but I do think it will come off because of the texture and people moving around on the cushions. You can buy vinyl to recover with at any fabric store--it is fairly easy to work with and if you are a great sewer--or know someone who is--you could still have the piping edging!
Beautiful chairs by the way! I LOVE finding great stuff at thrift stores!
Spray paint for plastic. make sure you prime so it sticks
Check with Fusion Plastic Paint or Rustoleum for plastic or even chalk paint to see their recommendations. Those are beautiful looking chairs.
Hi Charlotte: I do not think painting will last. I think your best bet is to go to Hobby Lobby, get some indoor outdoor fabric and recover. This fabric is waterproof and stain resistant.
Just came across your post...did you paint them and how did things work out? I've got some naugahyde chairs I'm thinking of painting.
