I had two of them (both wood). I cut both of them lengthwise in half. One is in the foyer for coats (attached to the wall) and one hangs on a closet door (again to hold clothes). One I painted, the other I left as is.
A coat of paint can always make a huge difference. I know gold dipped is really tending right now. Here is a photo for inspiration.
What type of a coat stand? Mine is actually a coat tree and I sanded it down, removed the old legs and put a cross (X) on the bottom for it to stand on. Then I removed the old coat hooks, drilled holes for 5/8" dowels at an upward angle and glued them in. Painted it all and it works well.
