You can paint with an enamel paint that is not only high gloss but extremely durable. I prefer RustOleum brand. Prep first by cleaning, sanding, wipe down with denatured alcohol, prime, then paint.
You will wannt to choose a high gloss paint and then be very very careful with your application. Everything will show! You will want to use a sprayer for best results. And sand and use a tack cloth between each coat too.
Hi Cyn, I've actually found that to get the best high gloss finish isn't with it a paint but with a clear sealant. I prefer minwax polyacrylic and generally do 2-3 light coats.
I would use a high gloss paint: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9Qvs3gbANNc
Add a gloss polyurethane when you are done painting or staining.
Clean well, sand, wipe it down, and then paint. If you choose to spray the paint on, then do light coats so it does not have runs. If you brush it on, same -light coats as well with a sanding between. To make it high glossy, do that through the sealant, a polyacrylic. Another though would be to decorate the chest with furniture transfers, here's some from Iron Orchid:

I would add a spray finish over the paint.
Hi Cyn,
Use many thin coats of top of the range Gloss paint over Primer (If raw timber) and Undercoat. Always use the best brushes or roller when using gloss paint and thin coats.
You can buy gloss paint, but it may be easier to use a high-gloss sealer over the paint.
Use enamel paint or epoxy paint.
Hello does this piece have an intact painted finished now? Do you just want to put a sealer on with a high gloss finish or do you need to restore the whole project at this point?
Hello. I have use the poly acrylic products on my items. Polyacrylic comes in several sheens including a high-gloss option. There is a spray can and paint on formulation. I use them on corn hole boards and they are very shiny and slick. This is a project product product that you may want to consider using.
I hope you find the perfect solution for your furniture’s needs
Thank you sounds like an easier way to go!
Hi Cyn, seect a gloss paint finish; or you could paint it the color of your choice and then apply a high-gloss clear sealer. Either way will work.
