Paint it! Another option is to leave as is and place photos, postcards or any flat mometos and have a piece of tempered glass cut to fit and place on top. Then you can change at any time you wish.
you could just go over it with chalk paint
how about glass tile?
You could decoupage the top using wrapping paper or pretty napkins, then paint the rest in a complimentary chalk paint
Farmhousepaint.com adheres to almost everything. I just paint over it with this paint and it never chips or peels.
This looks like the same finish I asked about. I want to do the top in a darker wood grain (and maybe the drawers) then paint the rest in gray. I've been looking at youtube videos

I agree with the other responses that painting or covering with a piece of glass is probably the best idea. Here are some other ideas: cover with a pretty contact paper (that have designs that look remarkably like granite or marble); adhere strips of pallet wood to the top with industrial glue and edge with wood trim to create a farmhouse/industrial look; decoupage top with burlap or other fabric and top with piece of glass for durability.
I think painting it is a great idea! Just be sure to grab the right kind so it lasts forever! Here's a link we found that might help you:
Formica top? You have many options. You can paint formica, you could remove it or go over it with contact paper. You could even turn it into a buffet or kitchen island. you could even decoupage the top or stencil it. There are many many options. It all depends on what you want your end result to be.
I've painted a laminate counter to resemble granite. Simply paint the laminate with a gripper primer. Then using acrylic paints from the craft store, sponge paint 3 or 4 colors until you find the look you want. Then seal it with a couple coats of polycrylic.
