Why not sand the edges to be uniform in wear & then wax with a darker wax.
Play it safe and repaint them.
Colored wax is a great idea. You also might try Old English Scratch Cover Oil. I use the dark on some furniture and the Light on other furniture. I also mix the two if I need that shade.

maybe make your own glaze. Add color where you want it and wipe it off quickly from where you don't.
