You can use fabric spray paint, do light coats, but you can expect it will not let much light through.
There are many 2nd hand stores that have lots of lampshades that are inexpensive, unless this one has great sentimental value to you, you might want to swap it out and save yourself the expense and time on this 1.
Look for fabric paint in the color you want. Since it's a dark color, you may need more than one coat too cover the burgundy.
Acrylic paint will do the best job. Fabric paint will work as well but is designed to soak into the fabric.

Is the lining of your lampshade burgundy as well, or is it white fabric or plastic, with just the outside fabric on the shade burgundy?
If the inside of the shade is burgundy, then even if you paint the outside, a reddish/pinkish color of light will still continue to shine through.
Also keep in mind that any shade that is painted will emit less light, simply due to the spaces in between the fibres being closed in/made more opaque.
I usually se a watered down emulsion paint from tester pot. But you could use it straight from the pot.

If the lamp shade is fabric choose a fabric paint. Looks for one that provides good coverage I used a cheap on from amazon and even after many coats the original pattern still showed thru.
Going lighter will be trickier and use more paint, just fyi. A fabric paint should do the trick though you might find it easier to replace the shade.
Spray paint would work best
You can use spray paint but make sure you do it evenly and in sunlight so you can judge if you are overlapping. It will look great painted but when you put the light on aggggg.
I would definatly spray paint it it will cover better
Hi Sharleen, hope this helps you out. Acrylic paint will give your lampshade the most solid looking coat. Fabric paint is similar to acrylic paint, but it will have a less stiff-looking finish since it is designed specifically to soak into fabric easily.
You could use fabric paint, but I've also seen people use spray paint.
Many great suggestions here, but have you considered just covering the lamp shade with a cut up sweater or cover it with one of those bubble stretch tops that were fashionable a few years ago. I see them off and on at thrift stores. They were just a one size fits all tube of lightweight fabric that "bubbled" up and could be thrown in a suitcase without taking up any room and always looked great because of the texture of the fabric. Just stretch the tube over the lampshade for a new color and look.
