Pick a color you like, maybe from a pillow, quilt, or window treatment that you already have in the room. Keep in mind, it's paint. If you don't like it, it's easy to change!
Do some exploring on this website and others for ideas. I think calming colors are the lighter shades--blues, greens, light purples, light pinks and light yellows. Do you have a specific color that you like to accent with or can you pull a color from a couch or pillows or drapes? Sherwin Williams has a collection of paint colors that are meant to go together--you can pick up the brochures for some ideas. You need to take into consideration the colors of your carpet, trim, furniture, drapes. Sometimes it takes me longer to pick out just the right paint color than it takes to paint the room!!
Here are a bunch of sites for you to explore! Try using a color wheel.

Remember to purchase and test samples first. If all else stumps you, have a consult with an interior designer.
Go to the paint store and get a whole bunch of color cards and remember that light colors are best in smaller rooms (they look and feel bigger). Tape them on the walls and look at them at different times of the day and in different kinds of weather (sunny, cloudy, stormy). Eliminate them until you have a couple colors. Get paint sample pints and do the same thing again eliminating them until you've found the ones you like and that make you happy.
If you had some pictures it would help. Is your room a warm room? Does it have a lot of natural light. What do you use the room for?
Starting with the living room, which flows into dining room & kitchen, it's all cream. Lots of windows.
As you can see, there's a shelf at the top of the tv wall, & there's a cubby above the mantel. I'm going to eliminate a lot of the green because I'm just so tired of it. I have some teal pieces to switch with the green, but I know teal will be out of fashion before long. The large print on the wall is going, too. Plan to add some color to the clock, which I bought at the thrift store & fixed. Maybe vinyl cling birds, too :)
