I've painted over brick fireplaces before, but this stone is rough. The top of the hearth looks like smooth marble, but the bottom is the same rough stone.
If the dor is flat I would use a roller, it will give you a smoother finish. Remember after you apply to coats to season your chalkboard per the directions on whatever brand you're using.

Remember that once its dried, cover the entire space with chalk and erase it in order to cure it properly!
I would not use blackboard paint on a door as it will not stand up to wear!
