What paint should I use to cover rust on a metal sided deep freezer?

It sits on a covered porch but still there is enough moisture in the air to have caused rust after several years. I would like to stop future rust and cover what is there now. What type of paint would be best and how should I prep the surface?

clean off and much of the rust with sand paper and wire brush first. Then use Rustoleum Rusty metal primer. Then use Rustoleum paint of your choice. Once the rust starts you will never stop it. But you can slow its advance by yrs if your keep up the work of preserving it.

Thanks for the help. I was afraid there would be no way to stop it but slowing it for several years will help a great deal.

Make sure to remove all rust with course sand paper making sure the area is clean and free of dust then paint with enamel. You can pick up small tins of enamel paint in a variety of colours in craft stores. You can even use the enamel paint used in Airfix kits. I used it on my enamel bath and it works well and is an in expensive way of dealing with small areas of rust.

Start with getting the rust off. Try a stiff brush or some light grade sandpaper just enough to rid the rust off. Clean the whole freezer of dust and dirt also with the vac. Vac the area that you used sandpaper on to get the powdery dust off. Use the brush attachment. Prep the freezer with some type of screen cardboard. I would use Restolem to cover rust, and spray the area let dry and repeat. This product is made so rust doesn't happen in the beginning. This should cover good, and not have any rust after this. Keep an eye on this through the winter. Check for moisture, and wipe it. Good Luck!

Thanks, it seems that most Hometakers have suggested Rustoleum. I will be trying this soon.
