Be very specific about what you expect and do not pay before the job is finished. I like to be around when they are working so if there are any questions I am there to answer them. Do not be intimidated or feel uneasy because they know more than you do.
Hire people from reputable companies who will stand behind their work and guarantees. Like Karen said, don't pay until the job is done to your satisfaction.

Hire a reputable firm. Although we have had good luck with individuals working on their own. We just have completed our first ever major construction job and while the workers were terrific, the work (because the workers did not come many days) itself took two months when we had been told two weeks. Still it is done and we are very pleased with it. We always stayed home to be on hand.
