RE: pillows on sofas

Not sure this is the place to ask this but I really don't know and would like someone to give me the lowdown on this. Here's my question... I see pictures of lovely sofas piled high with gorgeous cushions. They seem to fill the sofas right up. My question is - when one wants to sit down do you 1) move the cushions out of the way 2) sit on the edge of the sofa so you don't disturb them or 3) sit on top of the cushions?
I find this a query I ask myself whenever I'm at someone's house where the seats are full of cushions.
I'd just love to know what the correct thing to do would be...
Thank you.

I move the pillows if it's family or a good friend. If it's at an acquaintances home, I sit on the edge.

Never sit on the pillows in case Great Aunt Gertrude wove the fabric from her favorite poodle, Fido.

LOL! I can't say I ever thought of it that way.... :) heehee

Thank you so much for answering my question.

If possible, I move them aside. I don't do this with my sofa. I want people to be comfortable in my home sitting on my sofa.

I've been moving them aside too... but still had doubts as to whether I was doing the right thing or not. Thank you so much for replying.

It's #1, you move most pillows off the couch. Almost all are for looks.

My guests (and husband) move the cushions out of the way. I am quite a bit shorter than most people and find I need the cushions behind me so that my back is supported and my feet can touch the floor. Too many cushions (although they look great) are just plain awkward and take up a lot of seating area.

Thanks Holly, you have given me another perspective about the pillows. I appreciate your reply very much.

I personally rather you just move all my pillows off to the side, if you would like to lean on them that's fine... But fancy pillows aren't made for sitting on. Lol so if they are too many just sat them aside... Hope this helped!!!

Yes, Jeana, It has helped. I'm afraid of damaging fancy pillows when they are when I might be near them. Thank you so much for your reply.

Personally, if it is a deep couch, I use them behind me and thankful to have them. Otherwise, I might put them on the back of the sofa or hold them. Awkward!

Yes, I can see your point of view... I've been in the position where I've had to hold onto the pillows... :) 'awkward' as you say... :) Thank you so much for answering my question...

Thank you Ethel, for your reply. I just don't care for it and if I don't I won't. So, I moved them and they're gone. The usual rules apply. You wouldn't put a big elephant in the middle of your room, would you? Well, if you don't like something, you don't put it there or use it. All those pretty pillows may look like a magazine picture, but they don't present comfortable seating for people. This is the rule I go by. :)

Less is more, overdoing with too many pillows is way tooooo much! Why buy the sofa, if you can't find a place to sit?
