Is a Microwave With a Cracked Door Still Safe to Use?

In truth, it all depends on what exactly is cracked on the microwave door as well as how deep it is. If there is a small crack in the glass itself, then you can still use your microwave. The glass on the door is mostly for cosmetic purposes and doesn’t play a huge part in the function. What really protects you is the metal mesh or screen that is behind the glass. If that is damaged, then you have a problem. You will also have a problem if the mesh is sandwiched inside the glass.

If the metal mesh is damaged or you just want to be safe rather than sorry, you may be able to find a replacement door for your microwave. However, depending on the cost and model of your microwave, it may be both cheaper and less of a hassle to buy a new microwave. However, if you can find a replacement door for your model it is one of the easier repairs you can make to a microwave.

If the crack is just in the decorative trim you should be okay. However, if it is leaking it can be very dangerous. Microwave radiation can leak through the door and be harmful to your health. You can buy and inexpensive meter that will test the leakage of the microwave just to be on the safe side.

I'd be tempted to buy a new microwave and get rid of this one. Not sure it is worth the risk to be using it.

i agree with Annie. I have found that with Micros-the repairs are not worth the cost--by the time you get the service call, part(s) needed and the install. you can be close to about 1/2 cost of a new one. I think they have good ones for not too much.

I also agree that you should replace it for safety reasons.

It looks like just the cover is cracked, is it cracked on the inside as well? Or does it extend further than the cover? On surface value, it looks like a cover crack, a cosmetic problem like a product at a scratch and dent sale.

If the mesh is compromised by a crack, it is probably not the safest situation and you have a couple of options...replace the door or replace the unit because it is the mesh that protects from the microwave electromagnetic radiation. This form of radiation can cause damage to people by heating them the same way the microwave heats food and also depends on the size of the damaged area and how close anyone is to it when in use.

If your microwave door is bent, warped, or damaged or it will not close properly, you should not use it, either repair of replace. Best to you.

Hi Barbara, "IF" you feel the microwave is still safe to use, you might purchase a roll of whie duct take and use ithe tape to cover the bottom portion of your microwave with it.

Looks like it's a surface crack on the door frame. If it closes properly then it's still safe to use. You can use a two part epoxy to glue the crack together and blue painters tape to hold the crack closed while the glue dries. Remove any squeeze out with nail polish remover.

IF you feel it is safe, you can cover it in contact paper.

Since it is the plastic that is cracked it might be repaired with bondo like they use on cars. As long as the interior of the oven isn’t damaged it will be safe to use.

Microwaves are always on the curb in our area;FREE. Then check on Youtube for a video to make the swap.

I would get a new microwave just in case it was not safe to use. but if you have determined it is safe, you could use Bondo and fill in the cracks. You will have to sand the Bondo down to make it even, Then spray paint the entire trim white.

Hi, Maybe filler from DIY, then rub down and seal. or cover with vinyl Tape or Contact .

Warning! How was this damaged? If it affects the seal it will need to be replaced immediately for safety.
