How can I soften itchy material on a recliner?

I have a good comfortable recliner that has itchy wool ( I’m guessing) covering. How can I soften the material?

Toss a pretty soft fluffy throw on the chair to make it more comfortable.
Most likely not wool, probably a synthetic fabric like olefin. Nothing you can do but use a throw as Naomie suggested.
