Help!!! My entry door is UGLY!

Question

We just purchased this home and need help with the ugly front door. We are saving up for a new one, but for the time being, can anything be done with the UGLY amber glass? I plan on painting the door, but the glass I have no idea what I can do.

I would try to work with the yellow glass instead of against it but it all depends on the colors of the home's exterior also. Perhaps a cream colored door and hang an elaborate wreath with oranges, yellows, reds(think sunflowers) center to the window. It might actually look very classy! :)

Since you will be replacing the door, why not trace the shape of the glass onto paper; cut a piece of luan (very thin wood) that matches the shape of the glass. Glue it into the space. Use paintable silicone caulk around the edge and then paint it when you paint your door. It will look like the piece below the glass now. You can do this on both sides. Presto! No more ugly glass.

Call a window repair company and they will come take measurements and then replace the glass. Once you paint it and have clear glass I think it will be beautiful again!

iF YOU CAN TAKE THE CASING OFF, YOU COULD JUST TAKE IT TO A GLASS SHOP AND HAVE A CLEAR GLASS PUT IN IT. MOST INSERTS CAN BE PULLED APART. GOOD LUCK, OR AS THE OTHER SUGGESTION, COVER IT UP WITH WOOD AND THEN PAINT THE TWO INSERTS A DIFFERENT COLOR THAN THE REST OF THE DOOR.

Actually the door is not that ugly- I have seen worse! Painting you door a complimenting color would change the look of the glass. A new door knob that is a bit more ornate would also change the look of the door. You could think about going to the craft store and looking into stain glass materials and turn the amber glass into a stained glass work of art. do not change the color of the amber glass but use the 'lead' to create a dazzling pattern of beauty. just a thought.

I would go the route of Christine's post above. You would be surprised how easy it is to put clear glass in a door. I did the opposite on my entry way door (s). I had a company design sand blasted glass for privacy. I had clear glass removed. Not expensive at all. I like the idea of painting the door. Good Luck!

What does the rest of the entry area look like? I agree that with the door painted or even just 'washed' with a color(you can take the color paint you like and thin with water to where you want and then paint and wipe off the extra as you go. Do small areas at a time.) The door and the window will look completely different. I like painting our door a color that doesn't blend but,pops with the color of the house. Such as the house is soft yellow and our front door is red.

I like the idea of wood to match the bottom wood panel and the whole thing painted to cordinate with the house. I like either dk brown or black or you can paint the molding around it white for a contrast.

Have the door re-glazed by a professional. Much cheaper than a new door! You could paint the glass , I see no reason why not!
