Hi Rhonda, this video will show you how - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NfR2KIdndPo
It will depend on the stair railing you already have. Home Depot sells railings in many different kinds.

You can find rails at diy stores, also Restores usually have them. Be sure the rail is well anchored into the studs in the wall for the best function and stability.
Thank you everyone very helpful
If you just need a simple wood railing along the wall going down the stairs..... most lumber yards sell stair railings. And the hardware stores have the brackets. You will need a stud finder to make sure they are solidly fastened, and an impact drill makes it so much easier. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G2RiiAz5wU4

The last time I moved the railing it didn’t seem sensible to put it back. I thought it was much less effort to move. No regrets, I sold the house and got a place with a railing which won’t need to be shifted or reset for at least the next couple years.
Please post some pics and a bit more info so we can help you
