Tile needs ti be replaced, but not diing bathroom for a few years. Can the wall be made water proof with an adhesive surround glued on top of tiles for a short term fix, or does the surround need to be glued to dry wall? Also, Can you use a direct to stud surround without replacing tub?

The manufacturer of your tub surround will address each of these issues in their instructions. Problem with short term fixes is that they are seldom short term. Install your new surround in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions and it will last for decades.

Ken has a good point that short term fixes often result in double the work and expense down the road:

    1/ correcting the original problem

2/correcting the problems caused by the temporary 'fix'.
